Cirque Du Soleil: Performing in Tel Aviv is a baroque ode to apartheid, colonialism and oppression

You note on your website that your performance titled 'Allegria’ (Jubilation) is a baroque ode to the energy, grace and power of youth. Yet, by performing in Israel, you are placing this ode and energy in the service of Israeli colonization and apartheid, which brings sorrow and misery to the Palestinian people. Moreover, it is both cynical and hard to believe that a group such as yours, that is so dedicated to global citizenship and social involvement would stand against the wishes of a people’s movement for citizenship, freedom, equality and justice. It is for this reason that we appeal to you to reconsider your performance.

Today, Palestinian civil society groups are calling on artists to shun Tel Aviv in the same way that South African activists called on artists to boycott Sun City.  All we are asking is for you to refrain from crossing a picket line called by Palestinian society, endorsed by international organizations, and increasingly supported by progressive-Israelis. Palestinian civil society is asking this of you as the most essential contribution to their struggle to achieve peace and justice. We ask you to be true to your mission of building a better world and to your desire to further the benefits of global citizenship by hearing the call for boycott from the stateless and oppressed.

Alice Walker declines request to publish Israeli edition of The Color Purple

In a passionate letter, acclaimed US author, Alice Walker, refused to allow an Israeli edition of her novel, The Color Purple, to be published because the country "is guilty of apartheid and persecution of the Palestinian people".  She concluded that “now is not the time.”

The Case for Israel (Studies): It’s not hasbara. Honest.

Last month, the British Committee for the Universities of Palestine (BRICUP) published a briefing under the title: “Universities rebranding Israel’s image: Hasbara posts in Israel Studies threaten academic integrity.” Ben White extends this discussion of rebranding Israel through academic programs.

Palestinian civil society salutes Alice Walker

World renowned, best-selling author Alice Walker has set a new moral standard for international authors and cultural figures. By refusing to allow her famous work, The Color Purple, to be published in Israel due to its apartheid system, Walker told Israel and the world that she takes seriously her moral obligation not to be complicit in Israel’s occupation, colonization and apartheid. By reiterating her support for BDS in a concrete manner, she sent Palestinians a lucid message of love and true solidarity. Walker knows more than many that love towards the oppressed without supporting their struggle to end oppression amounts to futile charity when what they need is solidarity.

Palestinians greeted Alice Walker’s moral courage and inspiring solidarity with deep appreciation. The most prominent Palestinian message of gratitude came from the General Union of Palestinian Writers, which issued a warm salute to Walker in a statement that said:

The General Union of Palestinian Writers, while saluting this free intellectual and expressing its profound appreciation for her struggles against regimes of oppression and apartheid, from the darkest chapters of US modern history to South Africa of yesterday and Palestine today, confirms that human dignity is one and the same in all corners of the earth; it resists fragmentation, and it is the negation of color hierarchy.

Israel, a model to be disgraced: No creativity or innovation in oppression and colonialism!

PACBI is alarmed to learn that the Province of Rome is organizing an event in July with Israel as the guest of honor. Hosting Israel would function as a whitewash of gross human rights violations.

Cultural boycott biting, but quietly, Israel Festival’s classical music advisor admits

The cultural boycott of Israel is beginning to bite, a prominent figure in Israel’s classical music world has admitted. It appears that when it comes to fighting BDS, Israel is its own worst “delegitimizer.”
